Field notes from the AI frontier

Prototyping LLM projects in AI Studio, the Playground or the Console

So how do you actually start putting LLMs into your projects?

A pragmatic first step is often to play around in the “sandboxes”: Google AI Studio, OpenAI’s Playground or Anthropic’s Console.

These web interfaces are great for prototyping ideas quickly. You can try different models and see what comes out without writing a line of code yet.

Among other things, you can:

  1. Compare models: pick different versions (sometimes experimental ones) and see how their answers to your specific prompts stack up.
  2. Tweak the parameters: play with the technical settings that matter, like temperature (for creativity), top-p, the token limit, or switching on external tools such as web search.
  3. Generate the code: once you’re happy with the setup, grab the matching snippet (Python, JS...) so you can reuse your configuration through the API if you decide to move on to actual development.

One more advantage: you can test the very latest models for free, though usage quotas usually apply.

In short, a good way to check whether your brilliant idea holds up before you sink weeks of development into it.
