Field notes from the AI frontier

AI features on US news sites

In the category of practical (though not transformational) uses of AI, two interesting new features on American news sites:

  1. Automatic summaries: they generate 3 or 4 bullet “key takeaways” for each article. Useful given how wordy US formats tend to be, happily stretching a piece of news that would fit in 300 words to 1,000.

  1. Comment analysis: the AI sums up what readers think overall and surfaces the (rare) constructive contributions. Could that be a way to rescue sections that are usually drowned in an ocean of nastiness?

So, no revolution, but extra features that make the experience better. I haven’t seen anything like it on French news sites yet, have I?
